Many police officers experience terrible, traumatic events in the line of duty. A significant number of police officers turn to God when life becomes burdensome. Within the Catholic faith, the veneration of saints holds strong. For police officers, there is one particular saint that stands out.
St. Michael, also known as the Archangel Michael, is often considered the patron saint of police and military forces in the Catholic tradition.
Michael is a significant figure in the Bible, particularly in the Old Testament and the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. He is described as a mighty warrior and defender of God’s people. According to tradition, Michael battled the rebellious angel Lucifer and cast him out of heaven. This aspect of Michael as a powerful and righteous warrior has made him a fitting figure to represent the role of the police as defenders of law and order.
As an archangel, Michael is often associated with protection, justice, and righteous struggle. The primary duty of the police is to protect society, maintain law and order, and ensure justice. Therefore, there is a natural connection between Michael and the work of the police.
In the Catholic faith and other Christian traditions, prayers are often directed to saints for protection, guidance, and assistance in various life situations. Police officers may seek support and protection from Michael through prayer or by wearing religious symbols associated with him, such as medals or amulets.
Michael as the patron saint of police is not limited to one country or specific culture. He is recognized and honored by police forces around the world, regardless of religious affiliation. This reflects the widespread popularity and recognition of Michael as a protector and defender.
Many police officers like to have a picture of St. Michael in their locker or on their office desk. Some also wear amulets with the same image.
St. Michael’s Prayer
Many police officers like to say a prayer to St. Michael before their shift or before special (or dangerous) assignments and calls.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle;
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray:
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God,
thrust into hell satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen
